Thomas Story Kirkbride (1809-1883) was a physician, advocate for the mentally ill, and founder of the Association of Medical Superintendents of American Institutions for the Insane (AMSAII), a precursor to the American Psychiatric Association.  In 1840 Kirkbride became superintendent of the Pennsylvania Hospital for the Insane.  Kirkbride advocated building hospitals for the mentally ill in a style which he believed promoted recovery and healing, and his proposals for improving medical care for the insane would become known as the Kirkbride plan.  His book on hospital construction and organization was first published in 1854, with the second edition in 1880.
