"These letters were not originally intended for publication, nor were they written malignantly, -- But, since they touch so specifically upon an important problem and set forth some of the existing evils and immoral results of Negro education; -- I have ventured to lay them before the public. Whether this reason furnishes ample justification for such an enterprise, -- is left for the candid reader to determine. It will doubtless be regarded as an extraordinary circumstance that the disclosures in this little work should have passed unnoticed heretofore. No one, who has not scrutinizingly investigated the matter, can form any just or proximate conception of the extent to which the Negro is being demoralized by the propagation of existing methods of education."
