Samuel Webber (1759 - 1810) was an American Congregational clergyman, mathematician, academic, and the 13th president of Harvard University from 1806 until his death in 1810. He distinguished himself in mathematics at Harvard, completing his M.A. in 1787. In 1789 Webber became Hollis Professor of Mathematics and Natural Philosophy at Harvard. His System of Mathematics served for many years as the only textbook on the subject in New England.
Inscribed on the front fly-leaf, "J. Willard Peele's, March 25, 1819." J. Willard Peele (1804-0871) was a son of Willard and Margaret (Appleton) Peele. The Peeles were a prominent merchant family in Salem, Massachusetts, active in maritime commerce in the Pacific.
