• Black cloth covers are mostly clean, with gilt title on spine.  Boards show a little egdewear.  Corners are rubbed. 
• Spine with gilt text is a little cocked; title is bright, ends are softened and bumped.  See photos.  
• Binding is secure. 
• Pastedowns and feps have some writing in pencil.  See photos.
• Signed and inscribed on the dedication page.  See photos.
• Inside pages are free of writing and intentional marks. 
• Inside pages exhibit gentle age toning, closed tear at lower right corner  pg. 279, 281.  See photos. 
• Text block edges have a little dust at head, some foxing.  See photos. 
• Illustrated DJ has some edgewear at foot, bumping along head with tiny chips and closed tears, some staining to returns.  See photos.

Very good copy, fifth printing, of the first autobiographical work by American poet and memoirist Maya Angelou (1928-2014).  

Signed by the author, and inscribed to Caroline Seebohm (1940-2023), English-American author and journalist who had a long career writing for Conde' Nast publications.
