Beautifully printed reproductions, each on a separate sheet, of 21 sketches by the Eskimo native, collected at the turn of the 20th century by Robert Flaherty and published in 1915.  Cased in a cloth covered clamshell box with separately printed sewn wrapper commentary by the esteemed anthropologist Edmund Carpenter (1922-2011).

Drawings by the Eskimo at this time were exceptionally rare, and the harsh weather of the region isolated the native peoples from the art traditions of the world.  These minute, spare, and sensitive renditions show a life lived closely tied to nature, the walrus, the caribou, and the hunt.  An exquisite production of a rare glimpse into what is still a little explored world.

The book is signed and inscribed to Alfred Bush (1933-2023), long-time Curator of Western Americana at the Princeton University Library.

Edition of 200 copies, of which this is #119.  Printed by Finlay Brothers in Sabon typeface, using Rives, Somerset, Canson and Mohawk Superfine papers.
