This book was originally published concurrent with an international traveling exhibition. The photos are of rural white people living outside of Johannesburg. "while Ballen's work is often described as 'dark,' he ... speaks of the images referring to humanity's "shadow side". He say: "Shadow is better than dark, because dark for a lot of people connotates evil, and I always say it’s just the opposite. [...] The pictures shouldn’t be seen as dark, and I’m not quite clear what is ‘dark’, anyway.'"120 pages. 10.25 x 10.25 inches.

Hardback is overall in NEAR FINE condition, with a VERY GOOD DJ.

White boards are overall in very nice condition with sharp corners and firm spine ends.
Very simple design with a tiny black title in the middle of the cover is repeated on front, back and DJ.
Binding is secure and sound.
Inside pages are free of writing and intentional marks.
Cover exhibits minimal dirt along front foot edge from corner to about half-way.
Jacket is in remarkable condition for this vintage and color.
At a glance, the cover appears essentially clean and unblemished.
Close inspection of DJ reveals a minor vertical bend along fore edge.
Very minimal edge-/shelf-wear is apparent.
White cover has a couple tiny spots of dirt.
Book may exhibit additional minor signs of age or wear.
