William Jowett (1787-1855) was an Anglican missionary and author, the first Anglican cleric to volunteer for the overseas service of the Church Missionary Society. He worked in Malta, Ottoman Syria, and Ottoman Palestine. The present volume is a continuation of the author's previous work concerning the Mediterranean undertaken between 1815 and 1820. Jowett gives an account of the religious denominations in Syria and the Holy Land, including an extensive journal of his visit and a chapter with notes on the journal. An appendix contains the journal of fellow-missionary and abolitionist Joseph Greaves describing his visit to Tunis, then under Ottoman rule.
First American Edition. From the London edition of 1825.
