Joseph Heller (1923-1999), an American World War II veteran who flew sixty combat missions, wrote Catch-22 over a period of eight years while working in advertising and teaching English at Penn State.  This anti-war novel, which masterfully critiqued military bureaucracy, war, and the absurdities of modern institutions, became a massive countercultural touchstone.  It is also the source of the phrase "catch-22," meaning a paradoxical, no-win situation.

Jacket design by Paul Bacon.

First printing, as per the copyright page.
