Hardback is overall in VERY GOOD condition.

  • Gray cloth covers have black ink title and ornamented spine. 
  • Boards show staining and edgewear.  Corners are bumped.  See photos. 
  • Spine has white text on a black ground and is somewhat darkened, with crushed ends.  See photos.
  • Binding is secure.  Some signs of separation at back cover.  See photos.  
  • Pastedowns and feps have some toning, a few pencil marks, signs of splitting.  See photos. 
  • Illustrations are clear.  
  • Interior is age-toned, page 4 corner turned down.  Inside pages are free of writing and intentional marks.  See photos.
  • Text block edges have ink along head, deckle fore and foot edges with some foxing.

Vivid first person account of World War I in France, by an American serving with the French armed forces.  Alden Brooks (1862-1964), Harvard Class of 1905, was living in France when war broke out, and he served both as an ambulance driver and a press correspondent.  Brooks remained in France at the war's end; this volume was first published in Paris in 1929 under the title Battle in 1918: As Seen by an American in the French Army
