This is the second and final collection of poetry by William Faulkner (1897-1962) published during his lifetime, comprising forty-four numbered poems, some of which had appeared previously. It was notable, one critic wrote, "for the number of experiments in imitation which it contains." (William Gorman, “William Faulkner, Poet,” New York Sun, April 21, 1933, p. 25) The wood engravings are by Lynd Ward (1905-1985), and the entire book is a fine example of the printing craft, from the watermarked paper to the generous use of white space and the cloth chosen for the boards.
Limited edition of 360 copies, 350 of which were for sale. This is copy #255, signed in blue ink by Faulkner on the colophon page. Set in Janson type and printed on Milano paper, the book was printed by the Haddon Craftsmen and bound by the J.F. Tapley Company.
