Product Description

The Phonographic Dictionary,

Containing the Reporting Outlines for upward of Thirty Thousand words; embracing every useful word in the language, and a large number of Proper and Geographical names, Legal, Scientific and Technical terms, etc.

by Benn Pitman and Jerome B. Howard

In this case, phonography is the writing of words according to how they sound, using a special series of symbols developed for ease and speed of writing. Today, we refer to this as shorthand or stenography. Benjamin Pitman (1822-1910), brother to Sir Isaac Pitman, introduced Pitman shorthand to the U.S. when he moved to Cincinnati, OH in 1853. Another of their brothers introduced it Australia. It has also been known as the first course taught by correspondence. Before the introduction of Gregg shorthand, it was the most popular system of note taking in the English speaking world.

Book consists of many pages of words, with how they are written using Pitman shorthand. Unpaginated. 5 x 7.5 inches.

First Edition, published by: Phonographic Institute, Cincinnati, OH. 1883.
