Hardback set is overall in VERY GOOD PLUS condition, with VERY GOOD DJs and SLIPCASE.

• Black covers are mostly clean, with gilt text.  Corners are sharp. 
• Spine has gilt text and is bright with some bumping to ends.
• Binding feels unread.  
• Illustrated end papers/ pastedowns show little to no sign of age or wear.
• Illustrations are bright and clear. 
• Interior exhibits minimal signs of age and wear, a few edges show traces of adhesion.     
• Inside pages are free of writing and intentional marks. 
• Illustrated DJ has some edgewear, bumping along foot edge, a ding to spine head.  See photos. 
• Matching slipcase of black-wrapped paperboard has gilt text, pictorial label laid on.

Two-volume set, black boards with gilt titles with pictorial dust jackets, in a coordinating slipcase.  One volume offers a comprehensive biography, while the catalogue raisonée includes all of Bouguereau's known paintings.  Published in conjunction with the Art Renewal Center.  Set shows a little shelf wear, but appears unread.  Condition is overall Very Good Plus.

William Bouguereau (1825-1905) was a highly important and influential French academic painter.  Bouguereau won the Prix de Rome in 1850, and after his return from Italy, he established his reputation in Paris as a premier history painter, portraitist, and decorator of churches.  Elected to the Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1876, Bouguereau remained an important and influential member for thirty years.
