• Interior is gently age-toned.  Inside pages are free of writing and intentional marks.
• Text block edges have untrimmed fore and foot edges, gilt along head.

First Edition.  Publisher's garnet boards with gilt title to top board.  Frontis is a photographic portrait of Booker T. Washington with facsimile signature, with tissue guard.  Binding is firm and square.  Covers largely clean, with a few smudges, a little shelf wear at foot, some exposure and wear to spine ends.  Interior is gently tanned, free of marks.  Upper one-third of the front end paper is torn away.  A Very Good copy of this important first edition autobiography.

Booker Taliaferro Washington (1856–1915) was an American educator, author, and orator.  Born into slavery on April 5, 1856, in Hale's Ford, Virginia, Washington was freed when U.S. troops reached the area during the Civil War.  Between 1890 and 1915, Washington was the primary leader in the African-American community and an important member of the contemporary Black elite.
