36 Plates. 11 x 15 inches
N.d., circa early 1900s. Green buckram over heavy boards with title block in green ink. Title leaf, index leaf, preface leaf, followed by 36 chromolithographic color plates, each with facing leaf containing price list. Plates capture stunning high Art Nouveau design aesthetics. Price list leaves provide style details and serve as tissue guards. Boards are in Fair condition, with cloth detached at edges and spine strip missing, numerous stains and wear all around edges. Interior is, by contrast, Very Good Minus, complete in all parts. On a number of plates there is a smudgy darkening at the periphery, possibly the result of a chemical reaction of the glossy card stock used.
This volume is not exactly a trade catalogue, but more of a style book illustrating installation options for a number of the decorative tiles produced by Maw & Company. First founded in 1850 by the brothers George and Arthur Maw, Maw & Company was by 1900 the world's largest producer of ceramic tile, producing over 20 million tiles a year. During the tile boom, Maw & Co. published lavishly printed catalogues such as the present volume. Maw's "lists of persons and establishments supplied" covered five pages and included the Royal Family, two maharajas, many nobles, the railway companies, and cathedrals, hospitals, public buildings, schools, and warships.
Among the artists and designers of tiles produced by Maw & Co. was Lewis Foreman Day (1845-1910). Day was a British decorative artist and industrial engineer and an important figure in the Arts and Crafts movement. He started his own business in London in 1870, and created designs for a number of firms including Maw's. Plate 2A shows two panels by Lewis F. Day.
