The five parts contain a description of vegetable medicines; the manner of preparing them for use; a description of diseases and the manner of curing them; a description of "mineral and vegetabe poisons given by those called regular doctors, under the name of medicines;" and "health variously illustrated."  Smith combined his religious faith with herbal medicine, offering instruction in its practice in this volume.  A copy of Andrew Jackson's Farewell Address to the American People follows Smith's text.

Elias Smith (1769–1846) was an American preacher, physician, journalist and clergyman.  Smith co-founded a group of Christian Churches in New England that eventually merged with other like-minded, regional groups to become the denomination known as the Christian Connexion.
