Hardback is overall in VERY GOOD condition.

  • Full leatherbound with remnants of gilt-tooled bands to the spine. 
  • Covers exhibit moderate signs of commensurate aging and wear. 
  • Boards are moderately rubbed and raw in areas, including the edges, while the remaining finish is scratched. Please see photos. 
  • Corners are pushed and heavily rubbed with exposed boards. Please see photos. 
  • Spine retains remnants of the finish and gilt tooled bands though is mostly raw with the ends exhibiting detached portions and exposed textblock. Please see photos. 
  • Hinges are intact and secure though loosened along the interior. 
  • Binding is loosened in areas though remains secure overall. Please see photos. 
  • Endpapers are heavily age-toned and foxed with some soiling in areas.
  • Ffep is missing upper .25" portion.  
  • Flyleaf recto bears two ownership signatures in pencil. 
  • Vacat pages are age-toned and foxed with stains in areas. 
  • Interior is age-toned and foxed though overall exhibits mild signs of commensurate age and wear. 
  • Inside pages are free of writing and intentional marks.
  • Text block edges are darkened.

About the author:
Elias Hicks (March 19, 1748 – February 27, 1830) was a traveling Quaker minister from Long Island, New York. In his ministry he promoted unorthodox doctrines that led to controversy, which caused the first major schism within the Religious Society of Friends. Elias Hicks was the older cousin of the painter Edward Hicks.


Elias Hicks was one of the early Quaker abolitionists.


In 1794, Hicks was a founder of the Charity Society of Jerico and Westbury Meetings, established to give aid to local poor African Americans and provide their children with education.
