This collection of cautionary tales for children, told in verse and richly illustrated, was written in German by Heinrich Hoffman in 1845 with the title StruwwelpeterDr. Hofmann liked none of the children's books on the market, so he wrote his own book for his 3-year-old son.  Struwwelpeter was translated into English four years later and promptly became a favorite in English nurseries.  Slovenly Peter first appeared as a title in the United States in 1849, and new editions were issued at intervals in the years following.  Mark Twain famously penned his own verse translation of Hoffman's stories in 1891 while he and his family were in Berlin.
