Hardback is overall in VERY GOOD- condition.

• Publisher's brown cloth covers have beveled edges, blind stamped frame, with gilt at spine. 
• Boards show some smudges, heavy edgewear.  Corners are bumped, frayed, with exposed board.  See photos.  
• Spine has gilt text and is a little faded with frayed ends.
• Binding is rebacked, with original spine strip laid down.  Spine strip is loosened along one edge.  See photos.  
• Pastedowns and feps have some writing. 
• Interior is gently age-toned, exhibits some marginal toning, a few marginal notes in pencil.  See photos. 
• Text block edges have deckle fore and foot edges, foxing to the rough edges.

Presumed First Edition.  Publisher's brown cloth, beveled boards with blind tooled frame and gilt at spine.  One leaf of publisher's adverts at front plus eight pages at back of volume.  Title page printed in red and black.  Rebacked with red cloth, with original spine strip laid down.  Deckled page edges are foxed; interior is generally bright.  Extremely rare in this old early state. 

Hargrave Jennings (1817–1890) was a British Freemason, Rosicrucian, author on occultism and  esotericism, and amateur student of comparative religion.  In several of his books, Jennings explained that he used the word "phallic" in its non-gendered sense, meaning "having to do with the sexual organs;" thus he included worship of the female genitalia under the heading of "phallic."
