Hardback is overall in VERY GOOD condition.

  • Marbled covers, quarter leatherbound, are mostly clean, with red label and gilt text at spine.  See photos.
  • Spine has gilt text on label and is bright with firm ends.
  • Discreetly rebound, respecting the antique character of the text block.  See photos.  
  • New tan end papers/ pastedowns show little to no sign of age or wear.
  • Interior is age-toned, exhibits moderate staining, some foxing, some smudges, light edgewear, a few uneven pages, some edge damage at pp. 495 ff.  See photos.  
  • Inside pages are free of writing and intentional marks.

First edition, Philadelphia imprint.  Volume I of the Ornithological Biography is the only part to have been published in Philadelphia.  In this copy the Prospectus, Extracts from Reviews, and Subscriber List follow the Index at the back of the volume.  Expertly, discreetly, rebound in marbled boards with one quarter calf.  Interior is tanned, with staining throughout, a little damage limited to the page edges starting at page 495.  Condition is overall Very Good.  Seldom seen in commerce.

John James Audubon (1785-1851), artistentrepreneurnaturalistexplorer, and ornithologist, set out to make a complete pictorial record of all the bird species of North America.  The plates were issued as The Birds of America (1827–1838), and five volumes of accompanying text appeared as Ornithological Biography (1831–1839).  In addition to describing the birds pictured in the plates, Audubon included chapters on the landscape he traveled through, people he met, and other wildlife.
