The Black Sun Press, edited and founded by Harry and Caresse Crosby, was distinguished by the high quality of its editions and typographic excellence. It became one of the most important small presses in Paris in the 1920s. After serving in the U.S. Armed Forces in the First World War, Archibald MacLeish lived in Paris during the 1920s, as did many of the writers whose work was printed by the Black Sun Press.
The inside front cover bears a bookplate pertaining to Clifton Waller Barrett (1901-1991). Barrett, a shipping executive, was an avid and serious book collector from an early age. He read widely and voraciously, and wrote about book collecting. The focus of his collecting was American literature, with an emphasis on the years 1775-1850. In 1960 he transferred the bulk of his collection to the library of the University of Virginia.
First, limited edition. Published in March 1930, handset in Naudin type. This copy is one of ten marked H. C. (hors-commerce).
