Hardback is overall in VERY GOOD condition.

• Burgundy covers have blind stamped device, black label with gilt text at spine. 
• Boards show some smudges, scuffing, splitting at spine shoulder, edgewear.  Corners are scuffed, with exposed board.  See photos.
• Spine has gilt text on label and is bright with bumped, frayed ends.
• Binding is secure. 
• Orange end papers/ pastedowns show little to no sign of age or wear.
• Signed on the free end paper.
• Illustrations are bright and clear.
• Folded, six-panel chart has a pocket at back of volume. 
• Interior is gently age-toned, exhibits some light edgewear.  Inside pages are free of writing and intentional marks.
• Text block edges have a few marks.

Publisher's burgundy boards, text in Japanese with English captions and Appendix.  Signed by the author.  Illustrated with 265 plates in color and black and white.  Maps and bibliography follow the catalogue, a fold-out chronological chart has a pocket at the back.  Condition is Very Good, with a one-inch tear at top board and some superficial scuffing.
