Lothair is a late novel by Benjamin Disraeli (1804-1881) that concerns itself with the unification of Italy and the conflicts between Protestantism and Catholicism, with attractive, noble protagonists. The novel was hugely successful. The first edition, here for sale, published by Longmans, Green and Co. in London on 2 May 1870, sold out instantly. It was followed by some seven more British editions that year, and the first, large, U.S. edition also sold out immediately. Not everyone in British society thought it proper for a statesman and political figure like Disraeli to enjoy such great success as the author of a novel, but disapproval did not harm the book's sales.
Book plate at front pastedown from The Gray Library, with the motto "Anchor Fast Anchor."
