Israel Putnam (1718-1790) was an American army general officer, popularly known as Old Put, who fought with distinction at the Battle of Bunker Hill during the American Revolutionary War. [Wikipedia] This is an account of his life written by a colonel who was himself a distinguished fighter in the American Revolutionary War, and was as well aide de camp to George Washington, and a secretary and intelligence agent to Benjamin Franklin in Paris. He was also American minister to Portugal and then to Spain. His tone in this biography is one of praise, and one clearly feels he was in awe of his superior; yet an account by one who truly lived the events with the subject of his work, and was an eyewitness to his deeds, will undoubtedly prove invaluable as a piece of American history and its heroes.
