Hardback is overall in VERY GOOD condition.

• Leatherbound covers are mostly clean, with gilt ornament.
• Boards show some wear at shoulders, a little rubbing along edges.  Corners are sharp.  
• Spine has gilt decoration and blind stamped title label and is bright with firm ends.
• Binding is strong.  
• Marble pastedowns show little to no sign of age or wear; inner feps have some moderate foxing, staining.   
• Frontispiece is present.
• Illustrations are bright and clear.  
• Interior is gently age-toned, exhibits some marginal toning.  Inside pages are free of writing and intentional marks.
• Text block edges have gilt along head, untrimmed fore and foot edges with some foxing.

A Very Good copy of this handsome edition of the Life of Beethoven by Romain Rolland, published by Librairie Hachette.  Numbered edition, with wood engraving illustrations by Paul Baudier (1881-1962).  Custom binding of dark brown Morocco, gilt sunburst on spine, and metallic marbled pastedowns.  Binder's stamp inside front cover:  "N. Hutin."  The end papers are moderately foxed; the interior is a little age toned but unmarked.

Printed by Crété at Corbeil.  Of the edition, 20 copies were made on Japan paper, 115 on Hollande paper, and 1700 copies on vellum finish paper from the Marais manufacturers.  This book is copy #1699.
