A novel by Anatole France (1844-1924), the French poet, journalist, and novelist whose ironic, skeptical voice here ridicules the belief in the occult.  La Rotisserie de la Reine Pédauque was first published in 1893; when Mornay issued their edition in 1920, they turned to the artist Louis Jou (1881-1968) for the wood engraving illustrations.

This volume was the fifth title produced in the collection Les Beaux Livres, published by Mornay in Paris.  As per the colophon, the edition was limited to 1000 copies made for sale, issued on a variety of different papers.  An additional 95 copies were hors commerce, and our copy is one of the 65 printed on Rives paper.  The reverse of the half-title states that this is copy #LVII, printed specially for Monsieur Odend'hal.  The Odend'hal was a French family, with numerous members active at the time of this book's production, including a French naval officer, merchants, and an explorer, plus one branch which had emigrated and established itself in Baltimore, Maryland.
