Hardback set is overall in VERY GOOD condition.

  • Cordovan calf covers, three-quarter wrapped in black calf, have tooled borders, raised bands on spines with gilt titles. 
  • Boards show some smudges, bumps, sunning, dings, stains, edgewear.  Corners are bumped.  See photos.   
  • Spines has gilt text and are a little sunned, with bumped ends.
  • Bindings are firm; some cracking as at vol. 1, page 240.  See photos. 
  • Pastedowns and feps have a few marks. 
  • Frontispieces are present; V. 1 is portrait of Sir Hudson Lowe, V. 2 is a view of Longwood, V. 3 also a view of Longwood has small closed tear at front edge.  See photos.  
  • Foldout map at back of Vol. 1 has a long closed tear at lower left edge where it is bound in.  See photos.   
  • Interior is gently age-toned.  Inside pages are free of writing and intentional marks.
  • Text block edges are marbled to coordinate with bindings.

Complete in three volumes. Important account of Napoleon's exile based on the letters and journals of Sir Hudson Lowe (1769-1844).  The author, William Forsyth (1812-1899), sought to prove that neither the British government nor Sir Hudson Lowe was at fault as regards the treatment of Napoleon at St. Helena.

With engraved portrait of Hudson Lowe, two wood engraved views of Longwood, the residence built for Napoleon.  Folding map of St. Helena opens to 20x24 inches.
