First American edition of the complete set of this history of Napoleon's captivity on St. Helena, written by his companion in exile and testamentary executor, Charles-Tristan, General Count Montholon.  Napoleon had stipulated that no memoir about him be published for twenty-five years following his death.  Montholon respected those wishes, for Napoleon died in 1821.  But in 1846 Montholon's history of the period on St. Helena was published in London and also in Philadelphia.

Napoleon was a figure of immense importance and interest in the 19th century, and this history was in essence a contemporary account.  As the publisher wrote in his prefatory note, "of the long years passed at St. Helena, partial accounts only have so far reached us.  These Memoirs contain matters of the highest interest to the historical student, and will be sought after and read with eagerness by every one."

First American edition.  Volumes I and II issued by E. Ferrett & Co. in 1846; Volumes III and IV issued by Carey and Hart, 1847.
