- Illustrations are bright and clear, photo plates are on glazed paper.
- Publisher's book lists present at back of each volume.
- Interior is gently age-toned, exhibits scattered foxing, a couple closed tears, a few corner turn-ins. See photos.
- Inside pages are free of writing and intentional marks.
- Text block edges have gilt along head.
- Clamshell case, cloth over boards, has molded spine panel with burgundy labels and gilt text. Case shows some edgewear, wear to opening hinge. See photos.

A Very Good copy of the first edition of William Herndon's biographical history of Abraham Lincoln. Three volumes, publisher's boards covered in superfine with facsimile signature in gilt on cover and cameo portrait on spine. A little wear, particularly to the edges, but overall very good. Owner's inscription on inner fep of each volume.
William H. Herndon (1818-1891), American lawyer and politician, was in his own words, twenty years the friend and partner of Abraham Lincoln. He dedicated his personal biography of Lincoln "To the men and women of America who have grown up since his tragic death, and who have yet to learn the story of his life."
Inscribed "John W. Heath, Sept. 1889" on ffep of each volume.
