Hardback is overall in VERY GOOD condition, with a GOOD DJ under Mylar.

  • Emerald green covers are mostly clean, with gilt text and illustration. 
  • Boards show some staining to back cover, edgewear.  Corners are scuffed.  See photos.  
  • Spine has gilt text and is bright with softened ends.
  • Binding is secure, final two signatures sit slightly out of line.  See photos. 
  • Patterned end papers/ pastedowns have a few marks. 
  • Frontispiece is present and has intact tissue guard with caption; guard paper is foxed.
  • Illustrations, black and white line drawings in the text and color plates are bright and clear, with plates are tipped-in.  Plates have lightly foxed tissue guards.
  • Interior is gently age-toned, exhibits scattered light foxing.  See photos. 
  • Inside pages are free of writing and intentional marks. 
  • Text block edges are foxed.  
  • DJ is nicely preserved behind Mylar and is backed with archival paper.
  • Illustrated DJ has some edgewear, chipped corners, closed tears along head edge, bumping along foot edge, staining, darkening of spine strip.  See photos.

Large quarto.  Publisher's elaborately gilt-decorated emerald cloth.  With original dust jacket with design from front cover.  Twelve tipped-in color plates with captioned tissue-guards by Kay Nielsen, who also created the head and tail-pieces, decorative borders and full-page black and white illustrations.  Gilt cover is bright over patterned emerald cloth; a few stains to back cover.  Interior is unmarked, with scattered foxing to text pages and tissue guards.  Dust jacket, now behind archival Mylar, is darkened at spine, shows some soil to back cover.  Condition is overall Very Good.

A richly appointed volume containing sixteen fairy tales by Hans Andersen (1805-1875), illustrated by the Danish artist and designer Kay Nielsen (1886-1957).  Twelve color plates are tipped in, with further black and white drawings in the text.  The stories include "The Real Princess," "The Red Shoes," and "The Snow Queen."
