A three-volume encyclopedia dedicated to the history and documentation of the American theater organ, an instrument designed for the movie theaters of the silent film era that has now all but disappeared from American pop culture.  Volumes I and II cover organ manufacturing companies, while Volume III is dedicated to the Wurlitzer organ company.  Photographs, promotional materials, technical drawings, company records and more are reproduced.

The first two volumes, published in 1985 and 1989, were written by David Junchen (1946-1992).  Volume III, dedicated to the Wurlitzer pipe organ, is by Preston Kaufmann (1956-1998).  Kaufmann initially planned five volumes on the history of the Wurlitzer, as outlined in the prospectus inserted at the front of the book, but did not live to take the project beyond the volume found here.

Volume I published in 1985, Volume II in 1989, and Volume III in 1995.
