Hardback is overall in VERY GOOD- condition, with a GOOD DJ under Mylar.

• Cream covers with illustration in black and title in red ink. 
• Boards show some foxing and staining, edgewear.  Corners are scuffed.  See photos. 
• Spine has red and black text and is darkened with scuffed ends.  See photos.  
• Binding is secure, somewhat slant. 
• Illustrated end papers/ pastedowns have a little toning at edges.  
• Illustrations are bright and clear.  
• Interior is gently age-toned, exhibits some smudges, a closed tear at page 16 where fold-out illustration of the Plaza meets binding.  See photos.  
• DJ looks nice behind Mylar and is backed with archival paper.
• Illustrated DJ has some edgewear, chipped corners, chips at ends of spine and along head edge, some soiling to back, is price-clipped on front return.  See photos.

Stated First Printing, with no other publication dates on copyright page.  Publisher's glazed boards with "Eloise" in red ink and leaping figure in black.  Dust jacket, price clipped at front return, now beneath archival Mylar.  Chips at ends of spine strip which is tanned.  Boards show staining and spotting around periphery and along spine.  Binding is firm with some slant.  Interior is toned at margins, a 4-inch closed tear along the binding at page 16 where the Plaza vertical fold-out opens.  Illustrated throughout in black & white, pink & red.  Condition is overall Very Good Minus for this first issue. 

A first printing copy of one of the most popular children's books of the mid-20th century.  Eloise is the creation of Kay Thompson (1909-1998), an American author, singer, vocal arranger, vocal coach, composer, musician, dancer, actress, and choreographer.  Thompson's six-year old protagonist was aimed at adults, but quickly became very popular with children.  Eloise's distinctive look is the work of Hilary Knight (b. 1926), who collaborated with Thompson to create the whimsical black, white, and pink look of Eloise.
