This collection of fourteen stories, many previously published in periodicals, is the second collection by William Faulkner (1897-1962), following These Thirteen (1931).  Faulkner, a Nobel Prize-winning American novelist and short story writer from Oxford, Mississippi, is considered one of the 20th century's greatest writers, known for his innovative narrative techniques and characterization. [Wiki]  In 1934 when this collection was published, Faulkner's reputation was in its formative stages; the blurb writer opined that "this volume represents a distinct advance in Mr. Faulkner's work and in his versatility during a period in which his reputation as one of the most important writers in the country has become firmly established."

The dust jacket is an example of the work of Arthur Hawkins, Jr. (1903-1985), an artist and designer who created some 1,500 jackets on a freelance basis between 1927 and the 1940s.  His work was highly stylized, most remarkably poster-like with a European accent.
