Daniel Gerhard Brown (b. 1964) is an American writer best known for his thriller novels, most especially the Robert Langdon series and its blockbuster centerpiece The Da Vinci Code (2003).  Brown's novels often take the form of treasure hunts that take place over a 24-hour period and center on recurring themes of cryptography, art, and conspiracy theories.

Digital Fortress is Brown's first novel, begun after he read and was inspired by Sidney Sheldon's The Doomsday Conspiracy.  In 1996 Brown left his teaching job to write full-time, and Digital Fortress was published in 1998.  It and the two novels that followed had little initial success, with fewer than 10,000 copies in their first printings.  But with his fourth novel, The Da Vinci Code, Brown became the bestselling author of one of the most popular books of all time.
