Folio-sized volume of cover designs printed on Sunburst Cover Paper, produced by the Hampden Glazed Paper and Card Company of Holyoke, Massachusetts. This portfolio was produced from a contest for cover designs, mostly by commercial designers and illustrators. Descriptions of the plates include the names of the illustrators and their firms, number of inks used, and the prize winners. Half-leather bound with paper boards, gilt at head edge. Exterior condition is AS IS Good+ with the spine strip absent, staining and warping of the upper board. Interior is Very Good with slight warping to the head of first few plates.
The introduction by Frank Randolph Southard (1886-1958), American graphic artist and teacher of design, is followed by judging considerations of the contest and technical specifications of the plates. Seventy-six color entry plates on various colors of card stock, some embossed, follow.
The clarity of the plates and the condition of the paper, one hundred years later, are testament to the qualilty of stock produced by Hampden Glazed Paper and Card Co.
