A generally Very Good copy of the 1936 First Edition of this study of furniture from the Colonial period in West New Jersey.  Original navy cloth with gilt title.  Some darkening to extremities and edgewear.  The interior is uniformly tanned; photographic plates of the furniture pieces are very crisp.  Fifty-one full page photographic images, each with descriptive text on the facing page.

A classic study of 18th-century New Jersey furniture and tall case clocks.  Philadelphia and West Jersey stood high in wealth and culture during the colonial period, and this was reflected in the work of local fine craftsmen.  The examples examined in this book reflect both the restraint in detail that would naturally belong to the simplicity of the Quakers as well as those of more elaborate design and execution that would appeal to the world's people.  There are bureaus, clocks, chairs, corner cupboards, day beds, fire screens, high chests and highboys, looking glasses, lowboys, secretaries, sideboards and tables.  The text describes each example and also includes full provenances, tracing ownership from the orignal buyers into, when known, the 20th century.

First edition, limited to 300 copies.  This copy has no number.  A re-issue in 1986 (Second edition) was also limited to 300 copies.
