Limited edition; this is volume one of set #190 of 500 printed.  London:  The London & Counties Press Association Ltd., 1912  

Hardback is overall in VERY GOOD condition.

  • Dark calf covers are mostly clean, with gilt text and borders. 
  • Boards show some aging, edgewear.  Corners are frayed, with exposed board.
  • Spine has gilt text and is dulled with repairs to ends.  
  • Binding is secure, covers have been repaired.  Please see photographs for details of condition. 
  • Pastedowns and feps have some marginal toning, gift inscription attached.  
  • Frontispiece, photogravure portrait of H.M. King George V, is present and has intact tissue guard.
  • Ex libris book features an owner's bookplate on front pastedown.
  • Illustrations are bright and clear, color plates have tissue guards.  
  • Interior is gently age-toned.   
  • Inside pages are free of writing and intentional marks. 
  • Text block edges have gilt along head, deckle fore and foot edges.

A handsome volume whose purpose is to provide a natural history of British wildfowl and also enumerate shooting styles for game birds.  Red capital letters begin each section, full color plates show species of birds.  

PROVENANCE:  from the library of Colonel Wilson Potter(ca. 1880-1946), football star at U. Penn in 1906-1907, and veteran of the Spanish American War and World War I, where he was wounded at the Argonne offensive.  A noted big-game hunter, Potter obtained the North American prize big-game heads in the collection at the Smithsonian.  This book was a gift to Potter from John Coke of London, in 1927.
