This book is a reprint of Grierson's work published in 1885.  As the Foreword explains, the first edition (published under orders of the Government of Bengal) had been out of print for some years.  The second edition was prepared under orders of the Government of Bihar and Orissa, in consultation with Sir George Grierson, so that this "valuable book" would once again be available to government officers and to the public.

Sir George A. Grierson (1851-1941) was an Irish linguist and Indian Civil Service administrator.  He joined the Indian Civil Service in 1873, and over a 30-year career stationed primarily in Bihar, Grierson immersed himself in local languages and folklore.  Bihar Peasant Life was one of his early works; its account of everyday life among the Bihar peasantry in the second half of the 19th century received scholarly attention all over the globe.
