Second edition.  New York:  Cornish, Lamport & Co., Publishers, 1852.   

Hardback is overall in VERY GOOD- condition.

  • Green cloth covers show commensurate wear with blind tooled ornamental frame and central medallion. 
  • Boards show wear and bumps.   Corners are bumped and worn, with exposed board  Upper corner of back cover broken, also a chip at opening edge back cover.  Please see photographs for details of condition.  
  • Spine has gilt text and is discolored with crushed and frayed ends.
  • Binding is secure.   
  • Endpapers and feps have some light to moderate foxing and staining.  Lower corners of front feps bent and folded; owner's marks and writing.  Please see photographs.
  • Foldout map has heavy creases, a couple of closed tears at folds.  Colors are bright and clear.  Please see photographs for details of condition. 
  • Interior is age-toned, has scattered foxing, corner of page 81 folded down, some heavy edgewear at upper corners.  Please see photos.  
  • Inside pages are free of writing and intentional marks.
  • Text block edges are age darkened.

Scarce copy of the second edition with foldout map of Australia intact and in place.  

A field guide for the prospective gold prospector headed to Australia.  The subtitle of the volume reads thus:  "A full description of its geology, climate, products, natives, agriculture, mineral resources, society, and principal cities; accompanied by a Map of the Country, and statistical tables, showing the regulations and results of mining operations, cost of passage, necessary outfit, and every particular of information requisite for those desirous of emigrating.  The whole forming a Complete Guide-Book to the Gold Mines."  The author's understanding of the subject was the result of his two years' residency in, and role as medical superintendent under the Royal Commissioners of Emigration to Australia.

Second edition, as per the author's preface to the second edition, necessitated by the rapid depletion of the first edition.
