• Frontispiece is present and has intact tissue guard, stained at gutter.  See photos.

First Edition, Fourth Impression.  Publisher's tan cloth with blind stamped frame, color illustration laid on, and gilt title.  A few nicks mostly to the portrait frame.  Interior is unmarked, gently age toned.  Light edgewear to the untrimmed pages.  Condition is overall Very Good to this early printing.

The third book devoted to the red-haired protagonist Anne of Green Gables.  These novels by the Canadian author Lucy Maude Montgomery (1874-1942) enjoyed enormous popularity, as evidenced by their publication history.  Anne of the Island, first issued in July 1915, went through three printings in the first month, with the fourth impression (here for sale) issued in August 1915.

The portrait of Anne Shirley featured on the cover and frontispiece is the work of H. Weston Taylor (1881-1978).  Taylor, who studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, was a comic book artist and magazine story illustrator.  He worked for publications including the Saturday Evening Post, Cosmopolitan, and Good Housekeeping.
