An overall Very Good copy of this ode to tobacco, a promotional booklet published by Allen & Ginter, tobacco manufacturer of Richmond, Virginia.  Dedicated to the "Great Brotherhood of Smokers," this is a collection of poetry and prose which heaps praise on tobacco and the pleasures of smoking.  Pieces include "Hail To the Plant," "With Pipe and Book," "Triumph of Tobacco Over Sack and Ale," "Sweeter than Roses," and so on.  With color ornamentation and six full page color lithographs showing the stages of tobacco production.  Soft covers on pearlized stock, punched binding with knotted cord securing it.  Some darkening and staining to exterior; the interior is fresh.

Allen & Ginter was a major tobacco company in the 1880s, one of the first to employ female labor, and to include collectible cards in their cigarette packs.  The book presented here is another piece of promotional work, playful, humorous, nicely decorated, with the company's products enumerated inside front and back covers.

No publication date is given, but it likely predates 1890, the year when James Buchanan Duke acquired and consolidated his major competitors in the industry into the American Tobacco Company.  Lithography by Linder, Eddy & Clauss, New York.
