Hardback set is overall in VERY GOOD+ condition.

  • Half leatherbound covers are mostly clean, with gilt text and decoration at the spines. 
  • Boards show some edgewear.  Corners are bumped, some are worn with exposed board.  See photos.  
  • Spines have gilt text and are bright with scuffed ends, a chip at head of Vol. 1.  See photos.
  • Bindings are strong.  
  • Marble end papers/ pastedowns show little to no sign of age or wear; free end papers exhibit some marginal toning.  
  • Frontispieces are present and have intact tissue guards.
  • Illustrations are bright and clear, have tissue guards.
  • Interiors are gently age-toned, exhibit some marginal toning.  Inside pages are free of writing and intentional marks.
  • Text block edges have gilt along head.

Scarce and attractive Shiells edition of the Works of Edgar Allan Poe.  Eight volumes.  Contemporary half leather, fir green with gilded marbled boards, gilt title and decoration to the spines.  Complete set of 8 volumes -- Vols. I-IV: Tales; Vol. V: Poems Essays on Poetry &c; Vol. VI: Miscellaneous Essays &c; Vols. VII - VIII: Criticisms & Reviews.  Includes twenty-four tissue guarded illustration plates based on artwork by Frederick Colin Tilney and others.  Bindings show a little wear at shoulders and edges; interiors are unmarked with a little marginal toning.  A very nice set.  Condition is overall Very Good Plus.        

Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) was an American writer, editor, and literary critic.  Best known for his poetry and short stories, particularly his tales of mystery and the macabre, Poe is also considered the inventor of the detective fiction genre and is credited with contributing to the emerging genre of science fiction.

Published by J. Shiells & Co. in London and J.B. Lippincott Co. in Philadelphia.  Printed in Edinburgh by W.H. White and Co. Ltd., Riverside Press, except for Volume VI, which was printed by J. Miller & Sons, Edinburgh.
