This is the original text of a short story about the war in France by W. Somerset Maugham (1874-1965).  It was first published in a censored form in the April 10, 1943 issue of Collier's Magazine, and was later included in Maugham's story collection Creatures of Circumstance.

This edition was Number Eight of the Crown Octavos published by House of Books in New York City, designed by Andor Braun.  The inscription on the limitation page is not in Maugham's handwriting; it perhaps was presented to R.A. Freiman by the owners of House of Books.
