Hardback is overall in VERY GOOD condition.

• Original black covers are mostly clean, with gilt title labels on top board and spine.  
• Boards show some wear, smudges, edgewear.  Corners are bumped, scuffed.  See photos.  
• Spine has black text on label, darkened, with crushed ends.  See photos.  
• Binding is secure.  Page 259 (last page) is tipped in, glued to fep.  See photos.  
• Pastedowns and feps have some light staining, owner's mark at front pastedown.  
• Interior is gently age-toned, exhibits some smudges.  Inside pages are free of writing and intentional marks.
• Page 181 has "stoppped" for 'stopped'.  See photos.
• Text block edges have untrimmed fore and foot edges.

First Edition, First State.  Publisher's black cloth with title on gilded labels applied to spine and top board.  Boards show some exposure, rubbing to cloth.  Title labels are darkened; label at spine shows a chip, some scuffing.  Binding is square, interior is gently tanned consonant with the edition.  Misspelling of "stoppped" on page 181 signifies the first state of the edition.  Owner's inscription dated "December 21, 1926" on front pastedown.  A Very Good copy of this rare edition of Hemingway's debut novel.  

The Sun Also Rises is the first novel by the American writer Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961), which portrays war-weary American ex-patriots in Spain.  The title page introduces Hemingway as the author of "The Torrents of Spring" and "In Our Time," reminding the modern reader that Hemingway's fame as a novelist was yet to be established.  An early modernist novel, it received mixed reviews upon publication, but many scholars now consider it Hemingway's greatest work.     

First Edition, First state, published in the United States in October 1926 by Charles Scribner's Sons.  There were 5090 copies of the first edition produced with 'stoppped' misspelled on page 181.  Printings from the second state and beyond have the spelling corrected.
