Hardback is overall in VERY GOOD condition.

  • Illustrated covers in colored ink and gilt. 
  • Boards show some exposure, smudges, bumps, dings, edgewear.  Corners are bumped, scuffed.  See photos. 
  • Spine has gilt text and is darkened with softened ends.
  • Binding is secure, with some cracking at back cover. 
  • Pastedowns and feps have some bookseller marks, owner's marks.
  • Frontispiece is present.
  • Illustrations are bright and clear, have some scattered spots. 
  • Interior is tanned, exhibits some staining and foxing, more at front. 
  • Inside pages are free of writing and intentional marks.
  • Text block edges are darkened, have some foxing.

First American printing of this satiric fantasy by H.G. Wells (1866-1946).  Publisher's decorated boards, stylized marine forms with gilt lobster, bearing the designer's initials "RR."  Illustrated throughout by Lewis Baumer, English cartoonist and illustrator long associated with Punch magazine.  Block of publisher's advertisements follows the story's last page.  Condition is generally Very Good, with some wear to the boards and toning to the text block particularly on the first pages. 

The Sea Lady first appeared in serial form in Pearson's Magazine in 1901, before publication in book form by Methuen in July 1902.  This, the first American edition, was published in September 1902 by D. Appleton.  First edition, first printing with code"(1)" on page 300.
