Hardback is overall in VERY GOOD condition.

  • Red covers are mostly clean, with gilt title at spine.  Boards show a little edgewear.  Corners are sharp.  See photos. 
  • Spine has gilt text and is a little darkened with bumped ends.  See photos.
  • Binding is strong. 
  • Pastedowns and feps have some staining. 
  • Title page has a closed tear at gutter, an ink stamp at foot.  See photos.
  • Illustrations are bright and clear.  
  • Interior is gently age-toned, exhibits minimal signs of age and wear.  Inside pages are free of writing and intentional marks.

E.E. Roberts was an American marine engineer, inventor, and entrepreneur who designed the Roberts Safety Water-Tube Boiler in the late 19th century.  Manufactured by his firm, the Roberts Safety Water Tube Boiler Company based out of Red Bank, New Jersey, this invention was a highly influential advancement in marine steam propulsion.
 
The boiler was cleverly engineered using a network of standardized wrought-iron pipes and fittings rather than custom cast parts.  By running the water inside the small-diameter tubes while the fire circulated outside them, it significantly reduced the volume of trapped, highly pressurized water and virtually eliminated the risk of catastrophic "shell explosions" common to old-style boilers—hence the market name "Safety" boiler.
 
Because the Roberts boiler was lightweight, compact, and capable of quick steam generation, it became a preferred choice for small-to-medium vessels and was widely outfitted on private steam yachts and commercial tugs needing rapid power up.  Today, the flexible design remains a legendary case study among antique steam boat enthusiasts and model engineers.
 
An ink stamp on the title page reads "For further information and prices, apply to Charles B. Wilkens, Cortlandt St., NYC."
