- Binding is secure.
- Pastedowns and feps, coated in brown, have some signs of cracking at spine, an owner's inscription.
- Interior is gently age-toned. Inside pages are free of writing and intentional marks.
- Text block edges have yellow ink at head, fore and foot edges untrimmed.

A Very Good copy of the true First edition of the Civil War classic by Stephen Crane (1871-1900). With all the hallmarks of the first printing -- title page dated 1895, unbroken type on page 225, and publisher's ads beginning with three Gilbert Parker titles and ending with a Christian Reid title. Bound in publisher's original buckram cloth decorated in red and gilt, lettered in red and black, with yellow topstain; lacking the dust jacket. Light lean to binding. Cloth toned and lightly soiled and rubbed, with spine darkened.
Owner's inscription on front end paper.
