First Edition, First state, with overprinting on page 35.  Large octavo.  Publisher's celery green cloth with illustration and title stamped in red, yellow, and green ink.  Generously illustrated in color and black&white, full page and in the text.  No ownership marks.  One of the 'Famous Oz Books,' the very popular children's fantasy series.  Large type suitable for young readers or reading aloud.  A Very Good copy of this first issue.

L. Frank Baum (1856-1919), the self-styled "Royal Historian of Oz," was the author of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900), which garnered both critical acclaim and financial success.  Baum wrote thirteen further Oz titles based on the places and people of the Land of Oz.  The Patchwork Girl of Oz was the seventh book, published two years after its predecessor.  In the story's Prologue, the author explained the gap, citing first an edict from Ozma closing Oz off from the outside world, and then explaining how the wireless telegraph enabled him to communicate with Princess Dorothy and learn all the goings-on in the Land of Oz.

The illustrations are the work of John Rea Neill (1877–1943), a magazine and children's book illustrator.  Neill illustrated more than thirty books set in the Land of Oz.
