The first edition of S.E. Hinton's coming-of-age novel depicting the conflict between two rival gangs of White Americans divided by their socioeconomic status:  the working-class "greasers" and the upper-middle-class "Socs."  A forerunner of the Young Adult genre, The Outsiders was written by Hinton while she was in high school.  It was the inspiration for the 1983 Francis Ford Coppola film with numerous soon-to-be-famous Brat Pack actors like Tom Cruise, Rob Lowe, and Matt Dillon.

Susan Eloise Hinton (1948-) is a prominent figure in young adult literature, credited with pioneering the genre.  Her novels, known for their gritty realism and emotional depth, often feature young male protagonists navigating social struggles and urban environments, particularly gang culture.

Jacket design by Richard M. Powers.
