First Edition.  Inscribed and signed by the author.  Calf over thin boards with tooled title and design.  Composed, printed, and bound at the Roycroft Shops in East Aurora, NY, with all the hallmarks of Arts and Crafts values.  Boards show some wear at the spine, interior shows some staining in the margins.  Condition is overall Very Good for this exemplar of feminist writing and Roycroft craft.

The author, Alice Moore Hubbard (1861-1915), was a noted American feminist, suffragist, and writer.  This book is a philosophical exploration of the institution of marriage, examined from numerous angles.  Alice and her husband Elbert Hubbard were leading figures in the Roycroft movement, a branch of the Arts and Crafts Movement in England.  They died when the RMS Lusitania was sunk in the North Atlantic in June, 1915.

The title page, initials, and ornaments, printed in orange ink, were especially designed for this book by Raymond Nott.  Typography by A.V. Ingham.

Signed and inscribed by author on front end paper.
