Chapter I begins with the extent and military force of the Empire in the age of the Antonines and continues through to chapter 71 in which Gibbons discusses the prospect of the ruins of Rome in the 15th century with a conclusion of the whole work. 1,303 pages with index. 7" by 10".

Half bound in leather and decorative paper the boards show scuffing to all areas.
Corners scuffed.
Scratch across back.
Leather spine features four raised bands and gilt lettering.
Spine edge scuffed.
Front hinge cracked. Back hinge separated from binding.
Signatures on front pastedown and ffep.
Staining to back pastedown.
First several signatures detached at bottom.
Binding split at page 32.
Interior very clean.
No writing, highlighting, underlining or other intentional marks.
Book may exhibit additional minor signs of age or wear.
